As I sit here, staring at the bag, I have come to a conclusion. On this bag, there are several “selling points” to get you to come back to Del Taco. The very first one struck me.
“We’ve got a Macho Burrito ™ that’s over one pound.”
The American culture (and more?) is so saturated with consumption, it sickens me. The number one selling point is a burrito guaranteed to do hell to your digestive track. We’ve got 64 ounce buckets of soda. Super Sizes. More more more. And it’s not even about quality. It’s all about quantity. How much can I get for the best price. How many cheeseburgers can I get for a dollar?
Go to a retail store and watch the customers for a day. See how many people try to wheel and “deal” the associates.
“This is damaged! See this nick here. I should get 50% off!”
“Well, it is your last one. I should get a discount.”
“Oh, this is soo expensive. Can’t you just take some off?”
“YOU GUYS ARE FUCKING RIPPING ME OFF!? LET ME TALK TO A MANAGER!?”
“Yeah, I’ve got this exchange…”
The list goes on and on. Gimme gimme gimme.
Listen up. People yammer about rights and individualism.
This is NOT individualism.
Individualism is not about getting as much as you can. Individualism is not about cheating one person out of something. Individualism is not about putting yourself “on top.”
There is no “on top.” We are all people. We are all ALIVE. Is life not special anymore? Is life not amazing? Get the hell out of your delusion world and open your eyes! Perhaps even try to acknowledge the existence of another person!.
“Oh, capitalism is soooo evil!”
Maybe if we were capitalist–but we are not. America is a semi-anarchy state of consumerism. Buy buy buy. Get get get. Consume Consume Consume.
Life is not about how many cheeseburgers you can eat, or how fancy your table settings look, or how pristine your car is.
Life is about living. Life is about YOU. YOU are important, not how much money you save. Not how BETTER you are, but that YOU ARE YOU.
Stop worrying about the person “ripping you off” and start trying to make a difference. You’ll be richer than you can imagine.
